Walking Tall is an educational support program for children ages 5 to 11 residing in a transitional housing program in Chapel Hill. Many of the children have experienced abuse in the home and all are coping with homelessness and difficult family transitions. The goal of the program is to provide a safe space for these children to learn healthy coping skills, get support, and form positive connections with caring adults. Volunteers will work with the Support Group Coordinator and Walking Tall Intern to plan sessions and will work directly with the children on topics such as respect, self-esteem, feelings, anger, safety, and abuse. Volunteers will be provided with a comprehensive training prior to the start of group and on-going support and supervision from Compass Center Staff and Interns.
