The Court Watch Project is a federally funded project through the Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women, Justice for Families Program. The project is funded from 10/1/15 through 9/30/18. The Court Watch Project is coordinated and implemented by a paid part-time coordinator, a Leadership Team comprised of three SLEVAWN members and volunteer monitors in which court proceedings in the St. Louis Circuit Courts are monitored. That information is made available to the court, the Bar and the public to ensure transparency and to give victims a greater voice in how the court processes domestic violence cases. The Court Watch Project Coordinator and volunteers attend court on specific days to observe Civil Protection Order cases and record case outcomes on a form.

Volunteers are needed to assist in monitoring dockets on Thursday mornings and afternoons in both St. Louis City and St. Louis County Adult Abuse dockets. Dockets are typically 2-3 hours in length. No court experience or knowledge needed as training will be provided. We ask for a committment of one docket per month but volunteers may sign up for more slots.

There will be a training on November 18th from 830-1pm for all new volunteers to attend.

Great opportunity for interns, individuals needing service hours and volunteers wanting to give back to the community through systemic change. Contact Nina Balsam the Courtwatch Coordinator at ninab3@sbcglobal.net.

About Woman's Place

Location:

8300 Morganford, St. Louis, MO 63123, US

Mission Statement

Woman's Place works to end violence against women by providing compassionate crisis intervention, facilitating women's transition to safety and healing, and educating the community.

Description

Woman's Place was founded by the Franciscan Sisters of Mary as the metropolitan area's only drop-in center for women caught in the terror and pain of domestic and sexual violence (DV/SV). After 16 years serving those most at-risk of DV/SV, as well as those in acute crisis, Woman's Place remains a center of peace, hope and healing for anyone experiencing emotional, physical or sexual abuse. At Woman's Place, the wellness of women is of supreme importance and includes healing from past abuse and the prevention of further violence, mental anguish and injury. As an emergency center for women to seek help and understanding during her time of need or small window of opportunity, appointments are not required and there are no fees for services, making Woman's Place a vital link in the continuum of care provided by the region's domestic and sexual violence agencies.

Key services keep women alive and, in many cases able to continue caring for their children, by promoting the healing process and developing a plan to transition to safety. Programs include crisis intervention, survivor support groups, case management and self-empowering educational programs.
