Job Description:

The Matching Grant Program is a federally funded voluntary program and an alternative to the public cash assistance/welfare program. Matching Grant aims to help refugee achieve self-sufficiency through paid employment within their first 30 to 120 days of arrival in the United States. The Matching Grant Employment Intern will aid recently arrived refugees to find their first job in the United States through a series of activities, including teaching a career development class and more hands-on activities, such as helping clients complete applications.

The intern will work approx. 10-15 hours per week under the supervision and evaluation of the Matching Grant Coordinator. Hours are available M-F from, 9AM to 4PM, adjustable according to availability and the school calendar.

Duties include:

• Teaching a group of adult ESL students about the career development process, as well as long and short-term career goal setting;
• Assisting individual clients in developing actionable career goals and plans;
• Helping clients complete job applications in accordance with their plans and drive them to job interviews;
• Following up with clients after the job starts and providing ongoing support;
• Administrative and clerical duties required for grant maintenance such as distributing and logging of client NFTA bus passes;
• Tracking and recording services provided to each client in their volunteer logs;
• Ability to write articles/blog about the experience of assisting refugees in their job search;
• Mentor one Matching Grant client or family as an English language conversation partner for 2 hours a week;
• Taking Clients to the DMV;
• Other assistance as needed

Qualifications:

Minimum qualifications and expectations:

• Current undergraduate or graduate student;
• Professionalism, dependability, honesty, and punctuality;
• Strong oral and written communication skills;
• Willingness to ride a city bus or drive clients.

The ideal candidate will have:

• An interest in Buffalo's refugee population and/or career or job development careers;
• Prior experience with Microsoft Office, Google applications.
• A working automobile, with valid driver’s license and insurance
• Fluency Nepali, Burmese, Karen, Arabic, Farsi, Swahili, French, or Somali would be a huge plus
