Girl Scouts is seeking Program Directors for our newest grand funded program for Refugee 6-12th grade girls. Because this program is new, each director has the opportunity to determine time and location of meetings. Groups will met for 60-90 minutes at least once a week. Meetings are currently only for the Lincoln area. Groups will meet in schools and/or community centers around Lincoln.

Volunteers must have an interest in learning about refugees and serving girls in a unique life situation. Volunteers will learn about cross-cultural communication, as well as helping girls with topics like cultural awareness, communication skills, community services, life skills, wellness, financial literacy, and relationship building. Girl Scout program training will be provided.

Some facts: Nebraska has become fifth in the refugee resettlement per capita, with half of the state's refugees over the last 18 years residing in Lincoln. Yearly, between 700-850 refugees come to Nebraska, which doesn't include secondary migration, when refugees from other states decide to move to Nebraska.

Who is a refugee? A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or area afraid to do so. War and ethnic, tribal and religious violence are leading causes of refugees fleeing their countries.
