ORGANIZATION: Action Corps

  • 4 people are interested

We are currently recruiting new co-organizers for the NYC chapter of the Action Corps. This is a rewarding volunteer position that allows the individuals to cultivate their leadership skills and creativity, all while fighting global poverty and hunger.

Action Corps NYC is a national, volunteer-led, grassroots effort to fight poverty, hunger, and injustice around the world. We make it our mission to educate the community on global campaigns and initiatives that many times are life changing to those with a voice. We have worked on the Green Climate Fund, the refugee crisis, American poultry works, women cocoa farmers, food aid reform, and many many others. We table at local events and concerts, plan our own events, and send communications and requests to legislators and corporations insisting upon better practices and reform. We’re not a stiff group; we try to have fun, but still take our work and efforts very seriously.

As a co-organizer, you would lead the monthly meetings, maintain the email accounts, tell people what to do J, and just help keep us on track. We have core volunteers who will be there every step of the way, including our current organizers who have been leading for 2.5 years. But it’s important to turn over leadership to ensure that vitality, creativity, and vision remains strong.

Most of the responsibilities would be remote, but you do need to attend events within the city at least monthly.

Mission Statement

The mission of Action Corps is to champion justice in solidarity with people most affected by climate disasters and violent conflict. We achieve this mission by bringing together diverse actors for humanitarian advocacy--connecting grassroots activists to NGOs, media and members of Congress.

Description

Action Corps is a grassroots initiative to build people power in solidarity with people around the world. The organization is focused on U.S. policies in solidarity with people from Yemen and Burma, communities most affected by climate disasters, and low-income countries dealing with COVID-19. Action Corps grew out of Oxfam and is volunteer-run with advocates in 30 states.

Action Corps played a pivotal role in the passage of the historic Yemen War Powers Resolution to stop U.S. participation in the devastating war in Yemen. And we have secured key commitments from congressional leaders in support of the people of Yemen. For example, in October 2019, after leading rallies in front of their offices, Action Corps met face-to-face with Sen. Schumer, Senate minority leader, and with Sen. Jack Reed, ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and held a community meal with Rep. Eliot Engel, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. Soon after, all of them, at our urging, released public statements, calling for an end to U.S. participation in the devastating war in Yemen.
