Interfaith Action of Central Texas (iACT) is looking for mentors for refugee youths newly arrived in Austin. Volunteer mentors must commit to approximately 3-5 hours a week for the length of the school year, September 2016 to June 2017.
iACT matches two mentors to every high school aged teen and responsibilities include helping the whole family adjust to life and education in the United States. With graduation rates of refugee children at less than half what they are for Texas students, it is imperative to help them adjust and hopefully graduate from high school.
THIS IS AN UNPAID, VOLUNTEER POSITION
Any adult willing to make this commitment is welcome to join us, but all candidates must first attend a mentorship training session.
Next Mentorship Training Session: August 31, 2016, 6-8 pm
Where: 2921 East 17th Street, Bldg. D (People Fund Building),Upstairs Conference Room

Mission Statement
iACT cultivates peace and respect through interfaith dialogue, service and celebration.
Description
iACT's mission is to cultivate peace and respect through interfaith service, celebration, and dialogue. This mission is realized every day through our three programs: Red Bench, iACT for Refugees, and Hands on Housing.
iACT for Refugees: The only federally approved program providing ESL and cultural orientation classes to newly arrived refugees in the Austin area.
Red Bench: This dialogue series fosters unity by allowing people to meet others from different faith backgrounds, discover shared values and find common ground.
Hands on Housing: Austin's largest volunteer-based housing rehabilitation program provides critical home repairs to impoverished senior citizens, disabled individuals, and single parent households.
iACT also hosts several celebrations throughout the year, including the Hope Awards, A Night Under One Sky, and the Interfaith Day of Thanks Service and Celebration.
