ORGANIZATION: The Rag Collection

  • 6 people are interested

Be a powerful voice in the lives of youth by showing up once every week after school to work with youth ages 13-18! The workshops being offered to youth are: Paint My Story, Hip Hop and Songwriting, Art Journaling, and Mural Design. These workshops will be offered at different site locations around the valley.

Your main role is to create alongside youth, encourage them, and assist the teaching artists however they may ask you to! You don't have to be an artist to do this, but you must like hanging out with youth :). This is one of the most fun things you can do if you like art!

Training and a background check is required!

The lives you will get to know and the stories you will hear will change your life :). These students are amazing, and they are hungry to know that their voice matters to the greater community!

About The Rag Collection

Location:

PO Box 16415, Phoenix, AZ 85011, US

Mission Statement

The Rag Collection inspires youth to discover their voice and express it in the community by offering free art workshops, safe space, and trained art mentors to connect art to the heart through the power of story. We call ourselves The Rag Collection because we believe the torn up, broken parts of our story hold the most power and beauty when we learn where it belongs thru expression.

Description

The Rag Collection offers two unique programs in the community.

Beautiful Voices is an art program that connects trained artists to girls at StreetlightUSA to offer weekly art workshops for the purpose of play, expression, and discovering what art resources they connect with! We currently offer 4 weekly art workshops: Fashion Sewing, Paint Party, Ceramics, and Voice book Art Journaling. The goal of BV is to encourage, inspire, and empower girls who have experienced sexual trauma to rediscover the power, value, and purpose of their voice through the arts!

Raise Your Voice is an after-school, weekly series of art workshops that is free to the students of Alhambra High School. We currently offer Mural Crew (mural making and graffiti art), Photo Voice (photography and mixed media), and Phonetic Spit (poetry and spoken word). RYV has been an on-going program at Alhambra since 2012.

Our goal is to connect youth with artistic opportunities, helping them discover their talents and express their voice. We believe each story is valuable and many of the students we invite to create with us do not have other outlets, opportunities, or safe space to express theirs. We also believe that our community doesn’t have enough representation from today’s youth because they aren’t invited.

We also want to connect youth with the greater arts community in Phoenix through Field Trips, Guest Artists, and Student Art Showings.
