ORGANIZATION: AmeriCorps VISTA 'Where Louisville Meets the World' Project

The BEADED TREASURES PROJECT's (BTP) mission is to provide refugee women with tools and resources to overcome social and economic barriers to success. Using a micro-lending approach to entrepreneurship, BTP's goals are to train refugee women resettled in the Metro Louisville area in crafting and other income producing skills, focusing activities into marketable retail products and providing basic business and financial literacy to promote economic self-sufficiency. BTP utilizes workshop-based learning for key crafting and business skills, and the BTP VISTA Project will be a crucial component to expand the model and make it available to more disadvantaged women in our city.

The Capacity Building VISTA will work closely with BTP staff to maximize the organization's ability to meet its mission. The VISTA will assist with assessing and strengthening volunteer recruitment, social media, community outreach, and fundraising strategies. The VISTA will develop a fundraising campaign to fund the micro-lending program, as well as develop opportunities to create awareness and support in the local community. The VISTA will assist in recruiting new board members who can provide input in best practices.

AmeriCorps VISTA is a year-long service project focused on capacity building. The program was created in 1965 as a way to combat poverty in the U.S. with passion. Today, there are hundreds of VISTAs across the nation committed to service in their communities. VISTAs are expected to commit one year to serving the community and are paid at the federal poverty level. For more information about VISTA, including a description of the program benefits, read more on the National Service website: http://www.nationalservice.gov/programs/americorps/americorps-vista

Description

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) is a national service program dedicated to fighting poverty in America.

AmeriCorps VISTAs (Volunteers in Service to America) create and expand programs designed to bring community members out of poverty. Our VISTA project has VISTAs placed at ten unique and locally-based organizations in Louisville, working to alleviate poverty through economic development, educational programs, and refugee and immigrant integration efforts.

Since 2007, our VISTAs have streamlined volunteer programs, designed out-of-school time educational programs, partnered with community organizations to expand services, raised tens of thousands of dollars through fundraising and grant-seeking activities, and much more!
