ORGANIZATION: AmeriCorps VISTA 'Where Louisville Meets the World' Project

The mission of the Legal Aid Society is to pursue justice for people in poverty. We provide free legal services to the most disadvantaged in our community. We fight on your behalf when your health, safety, and stability are unjustly threatened. Legal Aid Society focuses on the following service areas: support for families; preserving the home; maintaining economic stability; safety, stability and heath; and populations with special vulnerabilities. Each year, the Legal Aid Society represents thousands of individuals or groups with incomes at or below 125 percent of the federal poverty guidelines.

The AmeriCorps VISTA member at Legal Aid focuses on the economic development program and is responsible for the following:

  • Develop a "legal toolkit" for low-income entrepreneurs as a self-help tool to educate them on the common legal issues and pitfalls to avoid in launching a small business
  • Develop and implement targeted community trainings that will educate low-income entpreneurs on how to successfully resolve legal issues
  • Develop and implement an ongoing curriculum component
  • Build and maintain relationship with community partners
  • Secure funding and expand the reach of small business legal assistance to the fourteen rural counties served by the Legal Aid Society

AmeriCorps VISTA is a year-long service project focused on capacity building. The program was created in 1965 as a way to combat poverty in the U.S. with passion. Today, there are hundreds of VISTAs across the nation committed to service in their communities. VISTAs are expected to commit one year to serving the community and are paid at the federal poverty level. For more information about VISTA, including a description of the program benefits, read more on the National Service website: http:www.nationalservice.gov/programs/americorps/americorps-vista.

Description

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) is a national service program dedicated to fighting poverty in America.

AmeriCorps VISTAs (Volunteers in Service to America) create and expand programs designed to bring community members out of poverty. Our VISTA project has VISTAs placed at ten unique and locally-based organizations in Louisville, working to alleviate poverty through economic development, educational programs, and refugee and immigrant integration efforts.

Since 2007, our VISTAs have streamlined volunteer programs, designed out-of-school time educational programs, partnered with community organizations to expand services, raised tens of thousands of dollars through fundraising and grant-seeking activities, and much more!
