Americana Community Center's mission is to provide a spectrum of services to the diverse individuals and families of the Louisville Metro area, including refugees, immigrants, and those born in the U.S. These services enable people to realize their individual potential, build strong families, and create a healthy and supportive community for all. The great cultural, ethnic and economic diversity of our community, especially the neighborhoods surrounding the Americana Community Center, provide a wealth of challenges and opportunities.
Americana currently serves over 5,000 individuals from 37 zip codes across Louisville and from 101 countries around the world.The VISTA project will strengthen low-income, refugee, and immigrant youth and parental involvement at Americana in high school completion and preparation for post-secondary education through leadership development programs and college and career readiness initiatives.
- Expand career development portion of the College and Career Readiness initiative
- Plan and implement an annual College and Career Fair
- Recruit professionals to lead workshops and plan curriculum
- Increase parental involvement in their children's academic and future success by developing a parental engagement program
- Streamline data collection process
AmeriCorps VISTA is a year-long service project focused on capacity building. The program was created in 1965 as a way to combat poverty in the U.S. with passion. Today, there are hundreds of VISTAs across the nation committed to service in their communities. VISTAs are expected to commit one year to serving the community and are paid at the federal poverty level. AmeriCorps VISTA members are passionate and committed to their mission to bring individuals and communities out of poverty. Members make a year-long, full-time commitment to serve on a specific project at a nonprofit organization or public agency.
Description
AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) is a national service program dedicated to fighting poverty in America.
AmeriCorps VISTAs (Volunteers in Service to America) create and expand programs designed to bring community members out of poverty. Our VISTA project has VISTAs placed at ten unique and locally-based organizations in Louisville, working to alleviate poverty through economic development, educational programs, and refugee and immigrant integration efforts.
Since 2007, our VISTAs have streamlined volunteer programs, designed out-of-school time educational programs, partnered with community organizations to expand services, raised tens of thousands of dollars through fundraising and grant-seeking activities, and much more!
