Lighthouse Guild is the leading not-for-profit vision + healthcare organization with a longstanding heritage of serving the needs of people who are blind or visually impaired, as well as those with multiple disabilities or chronic medical conditions. We help people of all ages who are at risk for, or are experiencing, vision loss. We provide services, research and education, and advocate to help people with low vision and blindness.
The Adult Day Health Care Program (GuildCare) provides healthcare and recreation for multicultural seniors with vision loss, multiple developmental disabilities and chronic medical conditions. The Arts and Crafts Instructor will lead seniors in a group environment through therapeutic, artistic activities that stimulate creativity, improve hands/eye coordination, benefit people with arthritis and neuropathy and build pride and self-esteem.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the program director or designee the Arts and Crafts Instructor will:
Supervise and lead arts and crafts activities.
Work with staff to procure arts and crafts materials.
Maintain a safe work environment for clients participating in art workshops.
Take attendance.
Prepare a variety of completed samples of each craft to display for arts and crafts workshops.
Set up before the group workshop and clean up after the workshop.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Artistic ability, and knowledge of how to use arts and craft materials.
A genuine desire to work with people with vision impairment and/or multiple disabilities is required.
Willingness to teach others.
Must be highly motivated and organized.
Bilingual Spanish/English preferred but not required.
DETAILS OF SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: This is an on-going opportunity that begins upon approval by staff members. Candidates must be available Monday-Saturday from 9:00am-3:00pm, at least but not limited to one hour per week, plus any time required for planning and preparation. A health form and proof of immunizations must be completed by physician. All candidates must be tested for TB prior to volunteering. The attire during this position is casual.
