Lighthouse Guild is the leading not-for-profit vision + healthcare organization with a longstanding heritage of serving the needs of people who are blind or visually impaired, as well as those with multiple disabilities or chronic medical conditions. We help people of all ages who are at risk for, or are experiencing, vision loss. We provide services, research and education, and advocate to help people with low vision and blindness.
The Adult Day Health Care Program (GuildCare) provides healthcare and recreation for multicultural seniors with vision loss, multiple developmental disabilities and chronic medical conditions. The Music Therapy program exists to increase client’s level of physical, mental and social/emotional functioning. The Music Instructor will facilitate the music sessions, and assist clients as they use music to support whole person well-being.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the program director or designee the Music Instructor will:
Use music to help clients address social, emotional and/or physical difficulties.
Be able to create a shared musical experience.
Encourage client’s participation in sessions, and support them with validation.
Engage clients with hand-held instruments, sing-a-long, etc.
Plan, set up, facilitate and break down musical workshops.
Monitor session effectiveness and report outcomes to program staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be an accomplished musician and able to take an active role in sessions by playing, singing and listening.
Patience, empathy, imagination, tact, openness to new ideas, a sense of humor and creativity required.
Experience as a therapeutic musician or one of the following music therapy certifications (RMT, CMT, ACMT) are preferred but not required.
Must be able to use fundamental facilitation skills to lead sessions.
Bilingual Spanish/English preferred but not required.
DETAILS OF SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: This is an ongoing opportunity that begins upon staff agreement. Candidates must be available one hour per week, plus any time required for planning and preparation. A health form and proof of immunizations must be completed by physician. All candidates must be tested for TB prior to volunteering. The attire during this position is business casual.
