The After School tutor is responsible for general supervision of youth, planning and implementing academic tutoring in math and language arts for students in grades K-5. Instruction and activities are designed expressly to promote subject mastery, develop grade-level competencies and to teach study skills. The Sequoia YMCA has four after school sites in Redwood City, volunteering would be done at one of those sites.
General Duties
- Help students achieve a better understanding of specific subject material and in improve academic capabilities in designated areas.
- Help students develop the study skills necessary for academic success. Identify students experiencing difficulties and provide encouragement and alternatives.
- Provide academic assistance to assigned students, individually or in a small group setting.
- Acknowledge student efforts, accomplishments and progress.
- Integrate an asset based positive youth development approach in the tutoring sessions.
- Assist students in developing self-confidence, raising self-concept, and reducing anxiety or fear of failure in academic work.
- Serve as a role model for students being served.
- Demonstrate the ability to care about and give attention to participant’s needs.

- Adelante Elementary School: Monday - Friday, 2:00pm-6:00pm
- Roosevelt Elementary School: Monday - Friday, 2:00pm-6:00pm
- McKinley Institute of Technology: Monday- Friday 2:00pm-6:00pm
- Rocketship Redwood City: Monday-Friday, 3:30pm-6:00pm

Description
The Sequoia YMCA is a branch of the YMCA of Silicon Valley serving Redwood City, Menlo Park and Woodside communities. The Sequoia YMCA, which has served its community for more than 50 years, operates a full-service health and wellness facility, and also offers a variety of programming at locations throughout the community.
Hundreds of youth and adults come into the Sequoia YMCA on a daily basis seeking support and services in order to improve their quality of life. We are proud to be a great community resource that helps families creatively spend time together, individuals maintain healthier lifestyles, and gives children and teens positive experience and memories that will last a lifetime.
