ORGANIZATION: Detroit Historical Society

PURPOSE:

Assist the Visitor Services Associate (VSA) in the efficient day-to-day operation of the gift shop by providing enthusiastically courteous customer service and support to museum patrons.

DUTIES:

- Ensure that the shop remains clean and tidy at all times;

-Assist VSA in closing transactions by packaging purchased merchandise;

-Aide manager in maintaining inventory;

-Assist in sorting, verification of pricing, folding and proper display of merchandise and goods;

-Provide excellent customer service at all times i.e. gift wrap purchased merchandise upon request, maintain back orders for merchandise currently out of stock, etc.

SCHEDULING:

This is expected to become an ongoing role but we ask that candidates are willing to commit to at least 3-6 months of service; and have the ability to provide a minimum of one 3-hour shift per week and a maximum of three 3-hour shifts per week.

We anticipate needing volunteers to fill shifts on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 11:00am-2:00pm.

There will be a one month trial period for this volunteer position. DHS reserves the right to determine appropriate placement at all times.

PREFERRED SKILLS:

-Minimum of one year experience providing customer service support;

-Experience working in a museum setting;

-Volunteers should remain courteous, helpful and maintain great communication skills;

-Willingness to participate in all relevant training and trial period;

-Maintain the ability to work as a team in a fast-paced environment;

-Must be physically able to stand throughout shift duration with the ability to lift ten pounds (10 lbs.);

-Must be willing to interact with children of all ages;

-Experience in merchandising and displays helpful, but not required.

TRAINING & SUPPORT:

Volunteers will receive on-the-job training in shop operation, focusing on museum gallery information and visitor FAQs.
