Kids Voting Minneapolis is a community-based, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working to prepare Minneapolis' 50,000 K-12 students to be educated, informed voters. Part of a national network of independent local affiliates, Kids Voting Minneapolis combines civic learning in the classroom, family dialogue at home, and an authentic voting experience to prepare the next generation of citizens.

Help kids experience the democratic process at a young age. You’ll hand out ballots, explain the voting process, and distribute I VOTED stickers.

Since 2004, in partnership with the Minneapolis Public Schools and the Minneapolis City Elections Department, Kids Voting Minneapolis (KVM) has offered Minneapolis K-12 students the opportunity to go to the polls on Election Day with their parents/guardians and vote. Students vote in their own voting booth, on their own ballot, and get an I VOTED sticker. This authentic voting experience furthers civic education and helps students understand the importance of voting. For this to happen, KVM needs 400 community volunteers who staff the 130 city precinct polling places to assist students as they vote. We are in need of volunteers for Nov. 8. This is a wonderful one-time volunteer opportunity plus a one hour training session. The Election Day shifts are 3 hours- 2:00-5:00pm or 5:00-8:00pm.

Mission Statement

Kids Voting Minneapolis is a community-based nonpartisan, nonprofit organization working to prepare Minneapolis' 50,000 young people to be educated, informed voters. Kids Voting Minneapolis is empowering students with the skills and confidence to embrace civic involvement. Kids Voting is working to secure the future of democracy by preparing young people to be educated, engaged voters.

Description

Kids Voting Minneapolis is part of a national network of independent local affiliates working to educate and inform our youth on the history and importance of democratic elections and citizen participation. Kids Voting provides a kindergarten-12th grade civic learning curriculum to all Minneapolis schools (public, private, alternative, charter and home schools) at no cost. Students learn about the right to vote, democracy, civic responsibility and the importance of participation in the voting process. The classroom activities help students develop critical thinking, information gathering and decision-making skills. Then on Election Day, students experience first-hand an authentic voting experience by accompanying their parents to their neighborhood polling place. Students cast a Kids Voting ballot, voting on many of the same candidates and issues that adults do. This simple act takes the mystery out of the voting process and instills in students a feeling of pride, accomplishment and responsibility.
