GO Project: Who We Are and What We Do

The GO Project shapes the futures of low-income New York City public school children by providing critical academic, social and emotional support starting in the early elementary years. GO provides year-round educational and family support services to children who are performing below grade level and equips them with the confidence and skills needed to succeed at school, at home and in life.

GO School Program: How YOU Can Help

During the GO School Saturday program, 1 st-8 th grade students are exposed to intensive academic support in a differentiated classroom setting led by a professional Head Teacher and 2-4 volunteers from 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM.

In order to ensure a smooth and effective program, the Community Engagement Program Assistant will assist the Community Engagement Team in critical programmatic and administrative tasks, such as (but not limited to): volunteer recruitment & management, family & student engagement, set up & arrival, recess support, data collection & management, and overall program support.

Specific tasks include, but are not limited, to the following:

Volunteer Recruitment

• Demonstrate and enthusiastically communicate to prospective volunteers/interns a thorough understanding of GO, and the benefits and merits of volunteering for GO
• Attend volunteer fairs targeted to maximize tutor recruitment
• Assist with reference checks on volunteers & ensure they have all necessary materials
• Ensure diversity of volunteer base

Volunteer Engagement, Support & Recognition

• Support the Community Engagement Team in conducting orientations for GO volunteer programs
• Support the Community Engagement Team to ensure strong volunteer attendance
• Conduct volunteer observations
• Work with GO administrators to address and resolve any challenges that may arise between volunteers and GO staff. Solicit feedback from all stakeholders to determine improvements
• Develop strong communication & feedback strategy for volunteers

• Ensure that at least 90% of volunteers report having a positive experience
• Assist in executing the GO Volunteer Recognition System

GO Families & Student Engagement

• Contact families, as needed, for necessary paperwork, to follow up on attendance, or for other engagement needs

Data Collection

• Support with the collection and organization of all data including student applications, report cards, ELA and Math scores, IEPs, and other information for all enrolled and prospective GO students.

GO School Saturday Program Support

Set Up & Arrival

• Ensure all materials are ready for staff & students
• Set up the Community Engagement (CE) Table prior to volunteer arrival
• Greet volunteers, students, and GO Families at the CE Table upon arrival
• Direct late arrival students to their designated classrooms

Volunteer Management & Support

• Support and answer volunteer inquiries during CE office hours from 8:45 AM - 9:00 AM
• Support One-Day Service groups with a brief orientation and transition into classrooms
• Strategically place Floater Volunteers in classrooms in order to fill the gaps of Committed Volunteer absences
• Observe classrooms to provide feedback on volunteer performance to the CE Team

Recess Preparation & Clean-Up

• Prepare and properly store recess equipment

Recess Management

• Supervise the arrival and dismissal of our 1 st-5 th grade students from the recess area
• Reaffirm recess rules at the beginning of each recess period
• Structure the indoor/outdoor recreational activities based on the safety needs of the students
• Actively and enthusiastically participate in recess activity support
• Supervise the 3-5 designated volunteers per class by guiding the volunteers’ behavior management skills and engaging them with the students

Clean Up & Dismissal

• Greet and direct families during dismissal
• Assist with the supervision of late pick-up students
• Clean up and organize all CE materials into designated storage areas
• Assist the Academic Team in overall building clean-up

Administrative

• Ensure timely response to GO Project emails and phone calls.
• Perform other responsibilities as requested by the GO staff
• A positive and engaged approach to all designated responsibilities
• Punctual and consistent attendance for GO School sessions
• Ongoing communication with the Community Engagement Team and Director of Curriculum and Instruction regarding overall recess activities and volunteer performance

Time Commitment

• Commitment to the 2015-2016 Academic Year
• 8:30 AM - 1:30 PM (5 Hours) on the following Saturdays

Locations and Placement

You can choose to support one of the following 5 locations:

• Avenues-the World School (1st - 5th Grade): 259 10 th Avenue, between 25 th and 26 th Streets
• Grace Church School (1st - 5th Grade): 86 4 th Avenue, between 10 th and 11 th Streets
• Grace Church High School (6th - 8th Grade): 46 Cooper Square (for GO Middle school placements ONLY)
• LREI (1st - 5th Grade): 272 6 th Avenue, at the corner of Bleecker Street
• St. Luke’s (1st - 3rd Grade): 487 Hudson Street, at Hudson Street and Christopher Street

Placement is based on a complimentary match between programmatic need and volunteer strengths. We will honor preferences when possible.

Qualifications

• Commitment to educational equity a must
• Background and/or experience in working with elementary and/or middle school students (ages 6-13)
• Flexibility and adaptability to meet the emerging needs of the program on a day-to-day basis
• Ability to manage relationships with a diverse set of community stakeholders
• Must be available on GO program days
• Professional work habits
• Bilingual (Spanish/Chinese) preferred
