Dancing in the Streets(DITS), is an annual community event sponsored by the Ann Arbor Community of Traditional Music and Dance (AACTMAD) and the Pittsfield Grange. The event takes place on Main and Washington Streets in downtown Ann Arbor. The streets are closed off, and 4 stages are set up. Three of the stages are mostly participatory dance mixed with some performing, the fourth stage is a concert stage. At the intersection of Main and Washington there is a family/kids tent where there are activities for Children and families including arts and crafts, instrument petting zoo, and a Maypole.
This is the 22nd annual event and is free and open to the public between the hours of 1:30 and 7:00pm. All musicians, teachers, and organizers donate their time and talents in order to make this a fun-filled family event for Ann Arbor residents and visitors.
This is a great opportunity for everyone to get a taste of traditional music and dance.
We are always looking to get new people involved in the thriving community dance and music scene in Ann Arbor, which includes many dance forms including: Contra, Swing, Cajun, English Country, Scottish, and more as well as community singing and Clogging.
You do not need any music or dance experience to volunteer. You can come out for an hour or come out for the day, whatever you choose. The tasks for volunteers include:
Putting up and taking down barricades
Helping keep the refreshments for the volunteers and performers maintained in the greenroom (at the ARK)
Running sound at the stages
Setting up and tearing down stages and canopies
Loading up chairs, tables, and other equipment on the trailer at end
Unloading trailer afterwards at Concourse Hall and the Pittsfield Grange.
All performers and volunteers are invited to an after-party at a local pub to relax and wind down with complimentary food and cash bar.
