The Public Computing Lab of the Montgomery County-Norristown Public Library is looking for volunteers to help staff its check-in desk and provide one-on-one help to patrons.
Please note that, under Act 153 of Pennsylvania state law, all volunteers who come into regular contact with children must submit a series of background checks before starting work. The cost of these checks currently totals approximately $25. The library will reimburse $11.
1) Check-in Desk Attendant
Volunteers at the check-in desk are primarily responsible for checking patrons in and out of the Lab, as well as handling print jobs and collecting print fees. They can also assist patrons with computer-related questions, if they feel comfortable doing so. Volunteers remain seated for most of their shift at a computer with Internet access.
Our check-in desk attendants typically fill a weekly shift of 3 to 4 hours. We like our check-in desk volunteers to have the ability to serve at least 40 hours, due to the amount of training time involved.
2) One-on-One Computer Help
We also like to have volunteers who are available to provide one-on-one computer help when our patrons need extended computer support. Examples of such tasks include:
- Creating an email account
- Applying for a job online
- Resume formatting
- Using social networks
This help can be provided any time that fits your schedule. We like our computer help volunteers to commit to at least one weekly 3 hour shift (three, one-hour sessions). The downside to filling this role is that the number of scheduled appointments varies from week to week. For example, one week you may have three appointments, another you might have only one appointment, and another you might not have any at all. For this reason, we ask that our computer help volunteers call the day before their shift to see if they have any appointments.
If any of these roles interest you, please download and fill out the "Downloadable Volunteer Application Form" found on the webpage below, then email it to mcnplcomputerlab@gmail.com.
