The Accokeek Foundation is in search of volunteers to help during this fall's "Those Crafty Colonials" homeschool program on September 29 from 10-12.

Volunteers will be assisting participants with educational activities, as well as helping to set-up the event and clean-up afterwards. Volunteers should be comfortable working around children, and willing to wear colonial clothing (provided by the foundation).

Please e-mail volunteers@accokeek.org if you are interested.

About "Those Crafty Colonials":

Maryland's early settlers had to be clever and resourceful to survive and thrive without today's conveniences. Learning some of these lost skills is not only fun, but can improve our health, our brainpower, and the planet!

Make your own embroidered handkerchief to save a tree, calculate calories burned by moving a zig zag fence, help conquer food waste by learning the science of food preservation.

Mission Statement

According to the Foundation's 1957 charter, "It shall be the purpose of this Corporation to preserve, protect and foster, for scientific, educational or charitable use and study for the benefit of the people of the nation, the historical sites and relics, trees, plants, and wildlife rapidly disappearing from an area of great natural beauty along the Maryland shore of the historic Potomac River."

Description

In partnership with the National Park Service, the Accokeek Foundation stewards 200 acres of Piscataway Park. Situated directly across the Potomac River from George Washington’s Mount Vernon, this land was protected to preserve historic views and now serves as an outdoor classroom for educational programs about land conservation, historic preservation, sustainable agriculture, and environmental stewardship. Entertaining tours and performances, customized experience based activities, and service learning opportunities help visitors connect to the land and to one another.
