The volunteer is a part of the hospital service team. You will work closely with hospital staff and other volunteers in a service capacity. Establish positive customer rapport while representing Ingalls Hospital. SHIP Counselors are trained to: Educate and answer questions about Medicare, Medicare Supplement, Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage, Medicare HMO, PPO, and other health plans. Assist in filing Medicare claims and Analyze Medicare Supplement and Long Term policies. Provide one-on-one counseling to Medicare beneficiaries and their care givers. Explain Medicare health care choices, and speak to small groups or help out at community health events.

Must satisfactorily complete the initial 5 day SHIP training session. Be able to navigate the internet. Must be willing to contribute 8-10 hours per month counseling SHIP clients. Provide health insurance counseling without conflict of interest. Cannot be affiliated with the insurance industry or insurance claims filing business to the extent that serving as a SHIP volunteer could be used for personal and financial gain. Must attend ongoing education programs or meetings.
