El Centro Mentoring Program is a voluntary adult to child match program serving youth in Trenton, Mercer County area. Adult volunteers provide a positive adult -friendship to a child/youth with special emotional needs that would benefit from one-to-one activities outside their family. These one-to-one activities are better accepted by the child and more genuine in the child’s world than an "artificial" therapy relationship. This is a free service for the youth and family.
El Centro Mentoring Program is a time-limited program lasting generally 12 months with a minimum requirement of 2 hours per week. During this period, El Centro Mentoring Program provides ongoing supervision and support, training for the mentors and the sponsoring of group activities for all participants.
We strongly encourage mentors to make a commitment of a minimum of 12 months. Current literature strongly supports the fact that children/youth that form a long-lasting positive relationship with an adult mentor have higher self-esteem, get along better with their parents and peers, perform better academically and are less likely to become involved with drugs and alcohol.
