The TURN PURPLE CAMPAIGN is a national movement to create a culture that does not accept the mistreatment of children or youth living on the streets. A multi-tiered year round initiative, we aim to turn the nation purple annually in April, beginning in 2006, in order to raise awareness for the 1.3 million American children who ran away from home in 2004 - 90% of whom were victims of child abuse. The TURN PURPLE CAMPAIGN will help expand the resources available to youth living on the streets, decrease the number of runaways, create a base of constituents who are looking to advocate for abused children, and heighten awareness that at-risk, homeless, and street kids are not "rebels without a cause" but survivors of abuse.

About StandUp for Kids - Chicago, IL

Location:

3614 North Ashland Ave, 1st floor, Chicago, IL 60613, US

Mission Statement

Ending the cycle of youth homelessness. We do this in cities across America, one youth at a time.

Description

In 2009, a handful of volunteers were moved to start the Chicago chapter of StandUp for Kids by making sandwiches in a Lakeview church basement. Along with providing street outreach services, we have a safe drop-in center (2012) for our Chicago’s homeless youth to relax and socialize, as well as a hot meal and access to our closet to obtain much needed clothing and personal items. Further, the youth have access to our volunteers who are there to help to the best of their ability with homework, and/or interview training, mentoring, counseling and emotional support.

We seek volunteers for our drop in center evenings (Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday) as well as volunteer groups who would like to supply meals to our youth.
