Do you think guinea pigs are great? So do we! We want everyone to know that these charming animals make wonderful lifelong companions. Join the SAS Critter Team where you can work directly with guinea pigs and a whole assortment of small animals that are not cats and dogs!

Guinea pigs are a growing population in shelters across the country. They have quirky personalities and unique ways of communicating that make them a joy to be with. Help enrich their lives while they wait for their forever homes. You will also be working with other guinea pig lovers and experiencing the rewards of a shared community caring for SAS’ non-cat and dog residents.

Bring your compassionate side to the shelter. The guinea pigs are waiting for you!

Volunteers on the Critters team provide care and attention to all the shelter’s domestic animals that are not cats or dogs: generally rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas and other small mammals, birds, reptiles and occasionally hens. The goals of this team are to assist the animal care staff in providing appropriate food, supplies and cage space for each animal, exercise and socialize the animals to help them stay calm and improve their chances of adoption, increase the number of adoptions through public outreach and awareness, and provide foster care when needed. We also educate the public, prospective adopters, and other shelter volunteers about the care and handling of small animals.

HOW CAN VOLUNTEERS HELP?
* Caring for and handling the shelter animals- Volunteers set up cages, provide fresh food and toys, groom, socialize and provide exercise to shelter animals. Some also help with transportation to veterinary clinics when needed.
* Public Outreach and Promotion - Team members help promote adoptable critters in a variety of ways including preparing information handouts on small animal care, ensuring that bios and photos of all foster critters are posted on Petfinder and the shelter boards, and staffing the monthly Critter Open House at the shelter to promote awareness of the small animals.
* Foster homes - We often need foster homes for small animals due to illness, pregnancy or lack of room at the shelter. We provide training and some supplies; all you need is a quiet room and willingness to help. A commitment of at least 3 months is requested, although shorter-term opportunities come up from time to time (i.e. rabbit babies). This is currently the team’s greatest need.

TIME COMMITMENT
* A commitment of at least two hours per shift.
* Time commitment depends, of course, on number of critters at the shelter.
*** Most available shifts are on weekends working as a Critter Matchmaker.
