Doctors of the World USA seeks new Board Members
https://doctorsoftheworld.org/
Email: Board@doctorsoftheworld.org
Doctors of the World USA (DotW) is US chapter of Medicins du Monde (MdM), a non-profit international health and humanitarian network that provides emergency and long-term medical care to the world’s most vulnerable populations, while fighting for people’s access, and right, to achieve health -- worldwide.
DotW supports MdM as it focuses its programs in four key areas: crisis response; sexual and reproductive health; harm reduction; and migrant health. Unlike many organizations, MdM recognizes that need and vulnerability are everywhere. It manages programs in 70 countries around the world. MdM is a rights-based organization delivering life-saving health while advocating for the removal of social and economic barriers that prevent people achieving the right to health.
We have recently won multiple awards for innovative public campaigns, and have received major grants from USAID and private foundations. The current Board is engaged. We are seeking new board members to to amplify our growth, influence, and impact.
Our Needs
Together with our existing board members, we are seeking to build a board that actively and energetically supports the growth of our brand, our strategy, and crucially, our financial resources.
The success of the organization in the long-term will require a targeted and strategic focus on growing the resource base over the coming 2-3 years. This is a critical phase of our growth, as we build up recognition of an international brand that is largely unknown in the US market.
In particular, we hope to build a base of annual, unrestricted funding through major and individual gifts, alongside foundation, corporate, and government support, for international programs. We also hope to make a name for ourselves with impactful, scalable domestic programming at some point in the future.
The nominating process will focus on attracting individuals who can thoughtfully and energetically support this growth, are comfortable with the risks and challenges of a start-up organization, and truly reflect the energy, commitment, and values of the Medecins du Monde network.
Desired Profiles:
We’d like to recruit board candidates with two or more of the following qualities:
have an interest in and experience with a data-driven, evidence-based start-up
are motivated by the prospect of helping to build a new and successful organization
have excellent strategic skills
have been successful in analogous commercial ventures, which may include experience leading or working in failed start-up ventures, who can bring that experience to our efforts
are medical and/or public health professionals who have a vested interest in helping DotW become a successful and influential player in the field of innovative healthcare delivery and/or humanitarian aid
are able to help build DotW as a trusted and influential voice in public policy debates
are very active and connected socially and are willing to access those networks for the benefit of DotW’s development
have the personal capacity to give financial support
In short, ideal candidates will be current or next-generation leaders in their fields; who have not yet committed themselves philanthropically; who have the personal capacity to give; and have some affinity for and connection with DotW’s international and domestic work and the vulnerable populations we serve.
Other Details
We have a small but highly skilled staff with significant experience in health, humanitarian response, social enterprise, human rights and fundraising. Our board includes health and humanitarian luminaries. Board member terms of reference are straightforward, and include willingness to make an annual 'personally significant gift’ to the organization. There are four board meetings annually. Appropriate insurance, a conflict of interest policy, and other key compliance items are in place.
How to Submit

Mission Statement
Doctors of the World is an international humanitarian organization providing medical care to vulnerable people affected by war, natural disasters, disease, famine, or poverty. We consider access to health care a fundamental right of all human beings regardless of nationality, gender, race, social status or religion.
Description
For over 30 years, Doctors of the World has been treating the most vulnerable populations; victims of armed conflict, natural disasters, as well as people who are affected by extreme poverty. In over 60 countries, we are saving and improving the lives of countless women, men, and children, using simple, low-cost measures, in communities around the world that cannot afford or access medical care to their own.
Doctors of the World responds to emergencies within 48 hours by sending doctors, nurses, logisticians, and medical supplies, and has the ability to provide primary care to 10,000 people a day. Our emergency disaster teams are experienced and efficient, and are often the first on the ground after a disaster, focusing where we can have the highest impact. Our teams have the ability to quickly assess the situation, and working with the local population, to provide services in the most critically needed areas.
