Empower girls to rock!

Each year, Girls Rock! Chicago debuts 40 brand-new bands at a showcase of original music at Thalia Hall.

Want to mentor a group of girls between the ages of 8 and 16 as they write, practice, record, and perform an original song?

Volunteer as a BAND COACH at Girls Rock! Chicago's day camp, Monday, August 8-Friday, August 12, plus the showcase on Sunday, August 14. Band practice is Monday-Friday from 1:30-3 or 3-4:30, depending on the age of your band.

As a Band Coach, you'll work with a volunteer Counselor to guide your camper band through daily band practice. The Band Coach’s primary role is to help a band of campers write a song, which will be performed at the End-of-Camp Extravaganza. Band Coaches help the campers out with everything from plugging in to singing in tune, from the early songwriting stages to their final dress rehearsal. Band Coaches should have some experience playing a traditional rock instrument (guitar, bass or drums) in a band and, ideally, some songwriting experience.

Mission Statement

Girls Rock! Chicago is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering girls’ creative expression, self-esteem and community awareness through music. Through our music education programs for girls ages 8 to 16, we are committed to educating girls about the musical, technical, and creative aspects involved in musicianship, because we believe that young girls are rarely encouraged to explore self-expressive creative outlets and are less likely to be given access to musical and technical instruction or equipment. We believe that rock music can be a crucial tool in allowing young women to respond to preconceived notions of what they can do and what they can become.

Description

Our week-long summer camp program is organized around motivating girls ages 8 to 16 through instrument instruction, music composition coaching, recording workshops, song-writing workshops, hands-on activities, technical equipment workshops, guest speakers, team-building activities and band performances. We seek to provide positive and supportive role models for campers though interaction and participation by volunteers who will share their experiences as women involved in some form of making music.

We believe in maintaining an emphasis on accessibility to ensure that girls have access to equipment and instruction regardless of their socio-economic background, race, ethnicity, or neighborhood. Our application is based on a sliding-scale tuition and no one is turned away for lack of funding.
