Lighthouse Guild is the leading not-for-profit vision + healthcare organization with a longstanding heritage of serving the needs of people who are blind or visually impaired, as well as those with multiple disabilities or chronic medical conditions. We help people of all ages who are at risk for, or are experiencing, vision loss. We provide services, research and education, and advocate to help people with low vision and blindness.
The Adult Day Health Care Program (GuildCare) provides healthcare and recreation for multicultural seniors with vision loss, developmental disabilities and chronic medical conditions. A Recreational Instructor is needed to lead a variety of enjoyable recreational activities for the seniors who attend the program.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Under the direction of the program director or designee the Recreational Instructor will:
Plan, organize and execute daily recreational activities.
Develop curriculum and teach program content appropriate for the participant’s age and abilities.
Execute all duties connected with set up, execution and breakdown of recreation workshops/activities, i.e., games, trivia, folk dance, square dance, sing-a-long, etc.
Demonstrate and teach proper techniques for each activity, and provide a safe and supportive learning environment for all participants.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be able to relate comfortably to disabled and blind adults/seniors.
Ability to plan and lead recreational activities independently with staff supervision, required.
Course work in recreation, education, sociology or a related field preferred.
Bilingual Spanish/English preferred but not required.
DETAILS OF SERVICE OPPORTUNITY:
This is an on-going opportunity that begins upon approval by staff members. Candidates must be available Monday-Saturday from 9:00am-3:00pm, at least but not limited to one hour per week, plus any time required for planning and preparation. A health form and proof of immunizations must be completed by physician. All candidates must be tested for TB prior to volunteering. The attire during this position is casual.
