The City Tutors (CT) is looking for a tutor to run study groups that provide academic support for CCNY Biology 101 class students for the Spring 2018 semester. Biology 101 is an introductory course for science students. Classes in the Fall met twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:00pm to 6:15pm, though this schedule may change for the Spring 2018 semester.
This is a great opportunity for students who are majoring (or have already earned a degree) in the course area to enhance their knowledge and experience, and for those who are interested in tutoring in their subject area of interest. In this role, you will be in communication with an instructor to improve students’ performance. Throughout this process, you will be supported and guided by an experienced academic support professional.
A tutor supporting this Biology 101 class is expected to commit a minimum of four hours and fifteen minutes every week. You will need to attend both the Monday and Wednesday classes (assuming schedule remains unchanged), as well as provide a minimum of one hour study group support. Study group times will be determined from a survey done in class asking when students will be available for sessions. Times that fit with the majority of students and the tutor will be selected for study groups. You would identify and support students who are struggling, and provide feedback to the instructor regarding students' concerns and difficulties that can lead to changes in future lessons. You will also meet with the CCNY Biology Department staff. You will be supported throughout this process by the City Tutors staff.
All tutors are expected to complete 6 hours of live training, plus another hour and a half for orientation. This is a commitment of 7.5 hours of in person training, and 4 hours of supplemental training for a total of 11.5 hours of training over the course of the Fall semester.
CT's tutoring program has been successful in helping students gain access to support that they otherwise would not have received, given their limited time spent on campus. Having a tutor support class early in the semester will allow us to employ strategies to reduce withdrawals and student failure rates. Your work with us would help the students’ overall subject area performance, and help us improve this educational support model, reaching more students and departments with comprehensive academic support.

Mission Statement
The City Tutors (CT) is a NYC wide volunteer tutoring and mentoring hub that ensures historically underserved communities have equitable access to resources that are fundamental to educational and professional success.
Description
Our vision is to create a hub where any New Yorker can leverage their academic and professional skills and content knowledge to uplift their community and where disadvantaged communities can access resources that they need.
We see tutoring as a way to empower individuals to work in the community. We provide flexible times, convenient locations, and meaningful experiences, allowing more community members to participate and to support community partners for longer.
We believe tutoring must be a reflective act that both helps strengthen individuals' support of others and helps individuals better understand themselves. We provide our tutors with access to industry mentors who help connect the work they are doing with us with what they've done in the past and what they want to do in the future.
We believe in leveraging the workforce skills of our community of volunteers by pairing those in need of professional support with industry experts who can provide insight into specific fields and feedback on professional documents.
We see the City Tutors as an opportunity to bring people together under a common purpose. We want like-minded individuals to feel they are part of a fellowship, to build their network with people within their discipline, and to expand the disciplines and industries they've been exposed to.
