Help eager adult students in Sacramento reach their goal of self-sufficiency by learning English!

Volunteers will serve as teachers or assistants for English As A Second Language (ESL) classes. The program teaches immigrants and first generation American adults basic English reading and writing skills, and life skills.

If you have previous ESL teaching experience, your TEFL certification, or previous adult education teaching experience, you may be eligible to teach a class. If you do not, you may still be a great fit as a classroom assistant!

Tasks include but are not limited to the following: ESL Instruction and/or assisting instructor during class and planning; customize curriculm to your teaching style; help with encouragement and reassurance. ESL classes are held Monday - Friday from 9:00AM - 11:30AM. The volunteer commitment is 1-2 days per week at least 2 hours each day.

SFBS accomplishes these goals by educating the community about health and nutrition in our demonstration garden; facillitating ESL instruction and GED prep tutoring; providing tools and resources for those seeking employment; providing parents with guidance and their infants with food and diapers; strengthening families through a program of ethics and self-esteem; providing early childhood education and after-school youth services; feeding the Hungry fresh, local produce; clothing the Poor; providing companionship to isolated seniors in the community; and providing high-tech knowledge for youth. SFBS relies on the support of individuals and businesses in the community in order to lead people from the depths of impoverishment to the pinnacle of self-actualization. This is accomplished by people donating goods and/or volunteering their time to give back to those in need. United Way Certified Agency
