Without our dedicated volunteers, Citizen Schools’ program would not be possible. In Houston we’ve developed a strong network of volunteers from a variety of businesses and organizations including Wells Fargo, Shell, Th e Women’s Fund, Baylor Coll ege of Medicine, NASA, the Center for Houston’s Future, and others. Citizen Schools engages volunteers in a variety of ways, but most intensively through apprenticeships. These talented local volunteers share what they know and love with students once a week for the whole semester, developing positive relationships and sparking new interests. For example, students in Houston have worked with geneticists from MDAnderson to learn about DNA, dominant and recessive genes, and family trees. Volunteers from Wells Fargo have taught Invest Like a Millionaire focused on financial literacy and investment decisions, applying mathematics in real world context. We deliver extensive volunteer training, including collaborating with volunteers to craft effective, engaging lesson plans and deliver dynamic apprenticeships. Our staff members support volunteers by aiding with instruction and behavior management in the classroom and providing logistical support for activities and the final WOW! Showcase event. For employees needing a more flexible time commitment, there are valuable opportunities to support our students by leading a one-day community exploration, volunteering at a Career Day, or serving as a guest judge or panelist at a WOW! event.

Many volunteers have reported professional benefits to volunteering with Citizen Schools (including networking opportunities and improvement in their public speaking and teamwork skills) as well as appreciation of their employers’ support.
