Our mission is to increase the engagement of the Ohio animal community in public policy. Our focus will be on grassroots engagement to influence legislation to improve Ohio companion animal-welfare laws. We will also work to educate and support the law enforcement and judicial communities in the enforcement and administration of Ohio's animal welfare laws.


Reporting directly to the General Relationship Manager, the Volunteer Coordinator provides leadership to volunteers and provides direction, coordination, and consultation for all volunteer functions within OVCA to help advance the humane and responsible treatment of Ohio's companion animals through education, grassroots advocacy and legislative engagement. Essential volunteer functions include:

(1) Developing, promoting and maintaining a wide range of volunteer opportunities within OVCA

(2) Maintaining descriptions for each volunteer assignment

(3) Recruiting, interviewing and placing applicants for volunteer work

(4) Scheduling all volunteer activity

(5) Working in partnership with General Relationship Manager to publicize opportunities for volunteers

(6) Maintaining accurate records and provide timely activity reports on volunteer participation to OVCA's General Relationship Manager

(7) Making recommendations to OVCA's General Relationship Manager on the most efficient use of volunteers, appropriate volunteer/team lead mix, and future needs to support volunteer program operations

(8) Conducting and/or arranging for volunteer orientation and training where needed

(9) Working in partnership with General Relationship Manager to develop and manage volunteer policies, procedures, and standards of volunteer service

(10) Evaluating all aspects of volunteer programs to ensure effectiveness and to recommend/implement changes as appropriate


(1) Experience leading teams or organizations. Volunteer experience preferred.

(2) Ability to effectively communicate with and empower volunteers to be effective in their roles

(3) Ability to work cooperatively with different kinds of personalities

(4) Commitment to OVCA, its goals, and mission statement.

(5) Strong verbal and written communication skills

(6) Proficiency in basic computer applications and a working knowledge of utilizing social media
