KAVI seeks tutors in a variety of topics to provide academic support to students in KAVI programs, ranging from grades 6-12. Tutoring will occur either at Saturday school at Wingate High School (600 Kingston Ave) or on a designated drop-in day after school once/week, held at Kings County Hospital (451 Clarkson Ave). Some students require an ongoing commitment, while some students require only a few sessions. Tutors must have an expertise in their subject area and some experience working with children and youth, ideally in a tutoring/teaching capacity.

Volunteers tutors will undergo a screening process that includes contacting references and an in-person interview.

About Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI)

Location:

451 Clarkson Ave, CG-53, Brooklyn, NY 11203, US

Mission Statement

Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI) is a hospital, school, and community-based organization that provides young people with productive and safe alternatives to engaging in interpersonal violence by empowering youth and cultivating their untapped potential.

Description

School Program:

Prevention and intervention of youth violence are essential to the core goals of the KAVI program. The programs consist of weekly workshops and activities that focus on: Identity Exploration, Self-Governing, Conflict Resolution and Communication, Peer Mediation, Goal Development and Critical Thinking, Life Skills Development, and Fitness. Our staff includes outreach workers that are familiar with the inherent challenges of life in central Brooklyn. KAVI currently has programs at the High School for Human Rights, the High School for Public Service, and Eagle Academy.

Hospital:

Hospital responders at Kings County Hospital work directly with victims of invasive wounds. These helpful responders work with victims as mediators, resource providers and general support systems. We also provide support groups for violently-injured teens.

Community:

KAVI provides the KAVI Young Ones (YO) afterschool program for students in grades 6-8. KAVI YO addresses many of the topics that our high school programs address. KAVI YO meets after school twice a week at the hospital.

Volunteer testimonials:

"I volunteer with KAVI because I wanted to help young women of color reach their full potential and help them understand that they can be agents of change in their own lives and communities." - KAVI Queens 2015-2016 Workshop Facilitator
