ORGANIZATION: Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI)

  • 6 people are interested

The Kings Against Violence Initiative "Young Ones" (KAVI YO) program will serve 20 youth in grades 6-8 by providing a co-ed, after-school empowerment and development program. Weekly workshops will seek to prevent and intervene in violence by supporting young people as they develop self-control, identity, healthy relationships, and an expanded awareness of their role in their own communities. KAVI YO will also provide academic support, mental health assessment and referral, physical fitness, and ongoing connections to other youth empowerment opportunities.

KAVI is seeking two adult (18+) workshop facilitators to provide programming 2x/week on Mondays and Thursdays from 3-5pm (days of the week may change). Workshop facilitators will provide mentorship to students at all times and provide strcutured workshops, based off the KAVI curriculum, in the second hour of each session. A KAVI staff member will always be present. Facilitators may be asked to accompany the group on trips or attend workshops during school vacation times.

The ideal mentor has some background or experience working with teens in a youth development or educational context; however, if you have a passion for connecting with teens, we are open to a variety of backgrounds. We are seeking volunteers who are able to make a sustained commitment for the entire school year. KAVI YO works from a youth empowerment perspective; we seek to create a space and provide information for young people to make safe, healthy choices on their own. Our belief that they have an innate capacity to do so is at the heart of our work, and we expect all volunteers to work within this framework.

Mentoring for KAVI is a great way to gain skills in group facilitation and leadership, and gain access to professionals in the social services, non-profit leadership, and medical fields. The process to become a volunteer will include a background screening, references, and in-person interview with KAVI staff. All volunteers will be expected to attend 2 full days of training in late September and quarterly meetings.

Mission Statement

Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI) is a hospital, school, and community-based organization that provides young people with productive and safe alternatives to engaging in interpersonal violence by empowering youth and cultivating their untapped potential.

Description

School Program:

Prevention and intervention of youth violence are essential to the core goals of the KAVI program. The programs consist of weekly workshops and activities that focus on: Identity Exploration, Self-Governing, Conflict Resolution and Communication, Peer Mediation, Goal Development and Critical Thinking, Life Skills Development, and Fitness. Our staff includes outreach workers that are familiar with the inherent challenges of life in central Brooklyn. KAVI currently has programs at the High School for Human Rights, the High School for Public Service, and Eagle Academy.

Hospital:

Hospital responders at Kings County Hospital work directly with victims of invasive wounds. These helpful responders work with victims as mediators, resource providers and general support systems. We also provide support groups for violently-injured teens.

Community:

KAVI provides the KAVI Young Ones (YO) afterschool program for students in grades 6-8. KAVI YO addresses many of the topics that our high school programs address. KAVI YO meets after school twice a week at the hospital.

Volunteer testimonials:

"I volunteer with KAVI because I wanted to help young women of color reach their full potential and help them understand that they can be agents of change in their own lives and communities." - KAVI Queens 2015-2016 Workshop Facilitator
