Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Virginia is seeking volunteers to assist with Power Hour this school year. For one hour after school, assist Club members with homework or tutor members in a specific subject needing additional study. Help kids get the best start they can this school year. Members range in age from 6 to 18, so whatever your academic skill level, you can be the difference to a child.

Club locations in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Exmore, and Franklin.

Power Hour Objectives

  • Become self-directed, resourceful, and independent learners
  • Turn in homework assignments on time
  • Improve organizational and time management skills
  • Improve academic performance

Homework Helpers Responsibilities:

  • Ask members about his or her day at school
  • Ask if he or she has homework to do
  • Ask if members need help
  • Respond to members’ homework questions
  • Help keep members on task and engaged in their work
  • Provide guidance with organization and critical thinking skills
  • Check members’ homework
  • Assist staff with member supervision
  • Encourage members without homework to read quietly

Tutor Responsibilities: Tutors work one on one or in small groups with members to address areas that need special attention or improvement.

  • Refer to staff for member or group to be paired with
  • Go over material to be worked on with member(s) before getting started
  • Answer questions and give examples of similar material
  • Keep member(s) on task and engaged with the subject requiring additional study
