Want to help students reach their dream careers? Feel comfortable talking with high school students? If so, consider becoming a True Colors Activity Volunteer with Promise Scholars!

Promise Scholars is looking for enthusiastic individuals to help lead discussions with high school freshmen regarding the students’ personality strengths and career interests. Promise Scholars works with all Chaffey, Ontario, and Montclair High Schools students, a population where only 8% of parents hold a college degree. Thus, volunteers will play a crucial part in helping these students, many of them who will be the first in their families to attend college, develop a college/career plan and develop aspirations for the future. In particular, volunteers will be asked to:

  • Guide a group of 5 -7 high school freshmen through a set of discussion questions regarding personality and career interests
  • Be able to share information about their own college and career pathways
  • Be able to commit to the entire time of the volunteer activity on the day of the event.
  • Attend a 1 hour training at Inland Empire United Way prior to the event. Currently, trainings are scheduled for 5:30 - 6:30 pm on August 30th and 3 - 4 pm on August 31st. If you cannot attend one of these trainings, there is also the opportunity to schedule an additional time for training that will work for you.

From this activity, volunteers will gain:

  • Small group facilitation skills
  • Student management skills
  • Satisfaction of helping students in the community gain knowledge of the college and career pathway
THIS OPPORTUNITY TAKES PLACE EVERY MONDAY-THURSDAY FROM SEPTEMBER 6-29 FROM 9:45-11AM. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up for as many days as they would like to volunteer!

For any questions, concerns, or confirmations, please email Sara Clark, Promise Scholars Program Supervisor, at SClark@ieuw.org.

Mission Statement

Promise Scholars believes that unlocking the potential of our community relies on unlocking the potential of all our children. So we bring everyone together--students, parents, educators, businesses, and local leaders--to introduce kids to the opportunities available after high school and make sure they get on the education pathway to achieve their goals. When we help them become successful and contributing adults, our entire region benefits from a brighter, more productive future. The vision of the Promise Scholars Initiative is to prepare all Ontario-Montclair School District (OMSD) students who go on to Chaffey, Montclair, and Ontario High Schools to reach their college and career dreams.

Description

Our early and all approach-we connect with all our kids starting in Kindergarten and continue that relationship even after high school-requires a lot of resources and partners. Every kid has the potential to succeed, and helping kids reach their goals is key in strengthening our community and a wide circle of caring and engaged adults helps make this possible.

We work to increase student knowledge about college and career technical training opportunities and help them develop and act on their plans for a post-secondary education.

This is achieved through in-class curriculum on college and careers starting in Kindergarten. Promise Scholars also takes all 5 th and 8 th graders on field trips to community colleges and four year universities so they can begin to envision themselves as college students. All 6 th graders participate in business leader presentations in class, where community members come speak about their path to a degree or certificate and their career. In 9 th grade we help student explore their personality strengths and career options. And 12 th graders get help with their college application and financial aid applications.

We serve low income neighborhoods in Ontario and Montclair where the majority of students will be the first in their family to complete college.
