With training, support, and materials provided by the Tutoring Program staff, you can help adults improve their reading, writing, math or English language skills.
You can help learners achieve many goals: To build the skills they need to pursue a GED. To improve their work opportunities or become more effective in their current jobs. To learn everyday English to go shopping, communicate with employers, etc. To better support their children's education. To find personal fullfilment and satisfaction.
One tutor said this about working with her ESL student:
"Paula and I have gotten off to a great start! I try to relate our sessions to real life situations and things she is interested in. Paula enjoys cooking... As homework, I told her to take the grocery list with her to the store and ask for the items in English. Next week we are going on a field trip to Chicago to practice using public transportation. We are going to visit the Adler Planetarium because her kids love space!"
