Pen Parentis Literary Salons
Building community and inspiring writers who are also parents to stay on creative track

About Pen Parentis

Pen Parentis is a 100% volunteer run 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization that provides critical resources to writers to help them stay on creative track after they start a family. Founded by author (and parent) M. M. De Voe, the award-winning organization runs a bicoastal literary salon that seeks to change the stereotype of parent-writer by presenting works of a diversity of exemplary writers who happen to also be parents.

Pen Parentis also seeks to support writing parents through its annual Writing Fellowship, its online and in-person community-building events, and through various partnerships with nonprofits, businesses, and government agencies that support the arts. By focusing on writers, we hope to help create a world in which the arts community at large supports and embraces parenthood as a normal choice in any working artist’s life.

About PEN PARENTIS

Location:

176 BROADWAY, NEW YORK CITY, NY 10038, US

Mission Statement

Pen Parentis helps writers stay on creative track after having kids. We are a federally recognized 501c3 nonprofit literary organization that runs a series of celebrated literary salons, an annual Writing Fellowship for New Parents, and many online and in-person networking and career-supportive events for writers who are also parents. We are honored to partner with many established businesses and nonprofits. Recent recipients of a NYSCA two-year grant, we have been frequently funded by New York City's Department of Cultural Affairs and Poets & Writers Magazine. 2018-2022 Platinum Status.

Description

Because the arts world stigmatizes creatives who have opted to start a family, Pen Parentis provides critical resources to authors who balance a creative career with parenting, inspiring them to stay on creative track. Founder M. M. De Voe serves as executive director. Our Salons Curator, Christina Chiu, won the 2015 Wai Look Award celebrating diversity. We are an all-volunteer organization. We work for our passion for literature.

Our Literary Salons feature exemplary creative work by writing parents and break stereotypes associated with parenthood. This long running program is featured in the New Yorker, New York Times and TimeOut NY, and has moved online for the duration of the pandemic. We also offer an annual $1000 Writing Fellowship for New Parents, and provide opportunity for writer-parents to build grassroots networking communities in our Cycle of Support.

We actively seek to be inclusive, and warmly welcome writing parents who are multiracial, multi-religious, parenting solo or through adoption, grandparents, teen moms, and LGBTQ. More details about us at penparentis.org
