Through Look Cool for School, Bridges to Independence is able to provide needy children with a new outfit and backpack for the first day of school.

I know it seems like summer just started, but it’s time to look ahead to the coming school year and let us know if you’d like to be a part of our Look Cool For School donation drive this year. Sponsors are paired with a child or children who needs items for their first day of school.

If you decide to help a child in your area, we ask the each volunteer or group commit to purchase a complete outfit for the students they adopt, including pants or shorts, a shirt, underwear, socks, a pair of shoes, and a backpack. Further details are included in the link below which we ask you submit online by August 6 th (earlier would be even better!).

Serious donors only please. Once you submit the online registration form, we will pair you with a child in our program, and you will be responsible for purchasing all items listed above. If you're unable to support a child this year, gift cards of any amount to clothing stores (Target, Walmart, etc.) are always accepted.

Thank you so much for your generosity, and for inspiring confidence and excitement in our kids as they start a new school year! If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for all your support!

Mission Statement

Bridges to Independence leads individuals and families out of homelessness and into stable, independent futures. We offer a continuum of aid and support for all family members, helping them attain financial security and move forward into self-sufficiency. A private, nonprofit organization, Bridges has been working with and for families experiencing homelessness since 1985, when we were founded as the Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless.

Description

In a nutshell, "what we do" is build bridges to independence for homeless families and families at risk of becoming homeless. Our bridges - our services - strengthen these families and provide them with the stability, skills, knowledge, and community networks to become self-sufficient. We offer supports for every family member - adults and children alike. Our short-term goal is to help individual clients right now. Long-term, we aim to break the inter-generational cycle of poverty by preparing today’s struggling kids to be tomorrow’s successful adults. From housing to financial literacy, from tutoring to youth development, from life skills to career counseling, we tailor a continuum of services. Some activities are required, some are optional, and some are just plain fun.
