Mission Statement
Young Urban Authors empowers young people by transforming them into published writers and equipping them with innovative entrepreneurial skills.
Description
Young Urban Authors (YUA) is a non-profit organization, founded in 2010, that provides three 6-week writing workshops and a 16-week, intensive writing program for teens after school. YUA specializes in serving culturally and socio-economically diverse teens, including at-risk and hard-to-engage youth. Any youth in an urban setting is eligible for program participation upon approval of a scholarship.
Our strength-based coaching process allows us to focus on teens who were not given the opportunity to fully nurture their creativity in traditional literary programs. In our high support, high expectations environment, we help participants focus their energies, express their talents, and vision their lives in positive-meaningful ways. We build self-confidence, through writing.
These teens are put through a rigorous writing course that meets three times per week for 3-hour sessions in a supportive environment in a cohort of 10-12 participants. All writing skill levels are welcome as this is an opportunity to cultivate creative and critical thinking skills. The program supports these youth, by giving them the confidence to progress with healthy objectives. At the end of this transformative process, each teen will gain tangible, transferable skills necessary for the 21 st century workforce and the school environment.
