Cause Areas

Tue Jan 17, 2017 - Wed May 17, 2017

4010 Sorrento Valley Boulevard#400San Diego, CA 92121

Girls on the Run San Diego is currently looking for more volunteers to join our four committees. These groups of 8-12 volunteers perform all of the behind-the-scenes tasks that allow our organization to reach 500 girls in San Diego county each season. Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization that inspires girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. We envision a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

Our Spring Volunteer Launch meeting will be Tuesday, January 17th from 6-8pm. Plan to join us for this event, where you can learn about each of our committees and select the one that is right for you. Email for more information!

The 5k Planning Committee manages logistics and volunteers for the twice-yearly 5k, which is the culminating event of each Girls on the Run season. The Spring 5k is in May and the Fall end-of-season 5k takes place in December. The 5K Planning Committee members are active year round planning the two 5k events, meeting roughly once per month. More frequent meetings occur just before each 5k event. Committee meetings take place on weekday nights and weekend mornings. Volunteer roles are as follows:

  • Brainstorm improvement and changes to 5K day from season to season

  • Take ownership of one area or aspect of 5K day (prepare supplies, serve as liaison between Volunteer & Events Manager and day-of volunteers, provide feedback, etc)

  • Organize team of day-of volunteers to carry out tasks in specific area of 5K

  • Recruit volunteer groups to participate in the 5k as running buddies or as general volunteers (e.g. corporate groups, high school girls track teams, colleges/sororities, running clubs)

Programs Committee volunteers are jacks-of-all-trades, meaning they typically help out wherever help is needed - this could be at fundraising events, Expo booths, on 5K day, or with Program supplies. Our Programs Committee is our MOST flexible group, as there is only one informational meeting each season! Then we reach out periodically with one-time volunteer opportunities and special event details. Most events last 2-4 hours, with multiple shifts available - weekends, weekday mornings and weekday evenings are all available! Volunteer roles are as follows:

  • Help staff with behind-the-scenes tasks (sort t-shirts, data entry, organize supplies, etc.)

  • Spread the mission of Girls on the Run at recruitment events or Expo booths - share information about coaching or volunteering, starting a new site, and sponsoring or fundraising for GOTR!

  • Carry out specific tasks at our semi-annual 5K events - such as handing out medals, supplying the girls with water, helping with registration, or selling GOTR merchandise at our booth

  • Serve as Shoe Fairies to size, purchase and deliver running shoes to our Funded teams

  • Support our major fundraising events by helping set-up or take-down, monitoring silent auction tables, passing hors d'oeuvres, or selling raffle tickets

The Marketing Committee handles all external communications such as media outreach before the end-of-season 5K. The Marketing team supports other committees by creating effective communications to promote Girls on the Run of San Diego events, fundraisers and program information. The Marketing Committee also handles the social media strategy and implementation (e.g. blogs, Twitter, TV appearances). The Communications Committee meets as needed, but much of the collaborations are carried out remotely. Volunteer roles are as follows:

  • Reach out to new contacts or media leads in order to promote and/or cover the 5K

  • Brainstorm new social media initiatives that will further Girls on the Run of San Diego’s social reach

  • Draft press releases related to new Staff or Board, program registration/start and 5K

  • Write posts for GOTRSD blog and pitch article ideas to the Committee Chair

The Fundraising Committee aims to solicit cash sponsors to support Girls on the Run of San Diego, in exchange for exposure at the 5k, fundraising events, on our website and via social media. Additionally, they look for in kind donations such as dining experiences, couple adventures, and local items for silent auctions. Fundraising volunteers liaise with other Committees (e.g. Marketing, 5K) to secure sponsorship for events throughout the year. The Fundraising Committee meets throughout the year as needed, but no more than once per month. Volunteer roles are as follows:

  • Source prospects to sponsor GOTRSD with either an in kind donation or cash sponsorship

  • Pitch new prospects for donations

  • Brainstorm creative new ways to engage donors and solicit donations

  • Fundraising
  • Grant Writing / Research
  • Event Planning / Management
