Work with Children in our Child Life Department

Cause Areas

It's flexible! We'll work with your schedule.

1708 West Rogers AvenueBaltimore, MD 21209

Under the direction of a clinical staff person, volunteer will provide developmentally oriented care to the patients. Patient behaviors and response to intervention will be documented in writing after each session.

Our minimum age to work directly with the patients is 18. Along with meeting the age requirement, volunteers must pass a criminal background check, pass a drug screen, get a flu vaccination (in season) and get tested for tuberculosis. Lastly, we ask for an initial commitment of two hours per week (the same day and time) for six months or at least 100 hours if volunteering fewer than six months.

Volunteer opportunities are ideal for people who love children, have compassion and patience and are willing to give of themselves. Volunteering is also an excellent choice for students entering the medical field. Whether you are a student, a retiree or someone who works full- or part-time, we can accommodate your scheduling needs.

Please read the following carefully:

-We require a two hour commitment, same day, same time, each week for one year. We can change schedules based on student’s class schedules as needed.

-Extensive training is required to work with our medically fragile children

-You may need to see children that are on isolation; of course we will provide personal protective equipment (gown, gloves, mask).

-In addition to your "play" time with the children, you will also be required to assist with toy washing, documentation of visits and picking up after play.

-You may be assigned a child that is not as responsive as another child but will need the same care, nurturing and attention.

-You must be able to lift up to 25 pounds

-You must be able to get down on the floor for play with the children.

- Dependability is essential. Our staff plan their day around your visit, if you don’t come in for your scheduled 'shift’ some of the children may not get the play time they need and that they very much look forward to.
