The Position:
The AmeriCorps VISTA member (member) will serve 35-40 hours a week. The member will serve with schools and communities as they work together to learn about good nutrition and thus eat more healthily, to learn how to garden and install school and home-based gardens, to implement Smarter Lunchroom initiatives aimed to increase consumption of nutrient-rich foods and reduce food waste, to implement community-wide text-based nutrition and health education and awareness initiative, to design and implement a WV-focused Foods of the Month program. The member will develop and provide training, technical assistance, develop community partnerships, events, celebrations and school-based farmers markers.
The Requirements:
- Basic knowledge of computers (Microsoft Office programs, Internet searching, graphic design programs a plus)
- Interest in helping children and youth programs, teaching experience a plus!
- Good writing, speaking, communication, research, & networking skills
- Creative and motivated hard worker
- College degree
- U.S. Citizen
- Willing to serve 35-40 hours a week, must have a car and driver’s license

Mission Statement
Shepherd University is a West Virginia institution of higher education which offers both bachelors and masters degree programs. The university, which was founded in 1871, initially focused on teacher training but eventually became known for its liberal arts curriculum. The university currently offers degrees in the liberal arts, teacher education, nursing, business administration, the social sciences, and the natural sciences and mathematics. Shepherd draws many students from the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia. We have a fairly high percentage (28.7%) of non-traditional students, and many of our students are first generation college students. We are also serving an increasingly diverse population of students.
Description
Shepherd University is seeking a VISTA member to assist the Office of Student Community Services and Service Learning in expanding the use of service-learning across the curriculum. There are faculty members in various departments across the university who use service-learning. Our goal is that every department across the university will eventually include a service-learning component so that every graduate from Shepherd University will have a service-learning experience. These experiences will benefit the students of Shepherd while also addressing important poverty related issues in the community.
