As a peer mentor you will be paired up with a student with high functioning autism and assigned to a not-for profit volunteer site with up to three other student pairs. The responsibilities and benefits for your participation include the following:

  • Modeling social skills for the students with high functioning autism
  • Performing a community service assignment alongside your student partner
  • Learning to find things in common with people who are different from you
  • Gaining experience to help you in the work force later on. (Volunteer experience may be used as a reference for employment.)
  • Acquiring community service hours to complete requirements for school coursework
  • Participating in two social activities with the other students

The students are required to perform a total of 3 hours of community service/job training a week for 9 weeks. Peer Connections provides real world experience in an employment setting focusing on the following essential employment skills.
