Help to Save Lives in South Africa
These are two of the 500 South African artists with whom we work. They are lifting themselves out of poverty through their remarkable beadwork. Art Aids Art is building a community center in Khayelitsha to provide them with additional support.

Art Aids Art seeks an Online Bookselling volunteer interested in having a meaningful impact on a small, fast growing nonprofit organization. Art Aids Art promotes education, health and sustainable economic development, working primarily with South African women and children impacted by poverty and/or HIV/AIDS. We are the FIRST American organization to open an art and education center in South Africa's largest township, Khayelitsha. We are launching a new online bookselling program in order to diversify the income streams supporting our community programs. We are looking for someone familiar with best marketing practices, price researching and terminology who can play an important role in our online campaign to sell/auction books that have been donated to us for fundraising purposes. The volunteer must be willing to dedicate approximately 1-4 hours a week to this project, which will include researching competitive prices for items, creating compelling descriptions, posting and reposting listings, and tracking success. We will handle all photography and shipping of items, so this is a 100% digital job that can be done according to your hours. We would very much like to work with someone on a long term basis, if possible. This is an unpaid voluntary position, but the reward of changing lives is South Africa is powerful. If you are interested, please contact us.

Mission Statement

Art Aids Art, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, promotes education and sustainable economic development through the arts.

Description

Founded in 2003 by educators and human service professionals, Art Aids Art serves South African women and children through programs in impoverished townships surrounding Cape Town. With our U.S. office based in Altadena, California, Art Aids Art's American activities focus on educating the public about South African culture and the HIV/AIDS crisis through presentations at schools, community centers and private home gatherings. Each year, the organization leads an intergenerational group of volunteers to Cape Town, home of our South African headquarters, to provide services through our own programs and in collaboration with participating South African organizations. In addition, Art Aids Art stimulates economic opportunity for South African artist collectives, purchasing artwork at Fair Trade prices and exhibiting it in the United States. Income from American art sales is reinvested into our projects in Cape Town. In this regard, working with Art Aids Art provides a unique experience of working with a nonprofit that also works like a small business. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES: Because of our small size and wide range of activities, we offer a wide variety of activities for volunteers, including: -staffing our public events, including interacting with the public, setting up displays, and providing information about our programs. -assisting us with a variety of art documentation, including: digital photo editing and graphic design, review and data entry of storytelling interviews, organization of photographs and art materials, assisting with intake and inventorying of handcrafts from Africa, etc.
