Hospice patient and family volunteers are vital members of the hospice team. They work closely with Hospice nurses, social workers and hospice care aides to assist in providing much needed support for patients, family members and caregivers. Their contributions range from providing periods of respite for the family, to reading to the patient or simply being there when needed for companionship and comfort. They provide friendship, support and assistance to patients residing at home and in assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospitals and hospice residential and inpatient Care Centers. Volunteers wishing to provide direct care services to patients and families must complete a volunteer training program, as well as a screening process that includes a reference check, a background check, a TB test, and a personal interview. After training, a one-year volunteer commitment is required. Those who have experienced the death of a loved one must wait at least one year before volunteering with patients and families. This opportunity has locations in the Gainesville, Lake City, Chiefland, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Deland and Palatka areas. To apply online visit www.HavenHospice.org/volunteer
