Fourth graders being taught valuable lessons about Developmental Disabilities.

We are entering the third year of a three year grant project to rewrite and expand our curriculum. As we rollout this innovative product, we have a web component we would like to add as well. This will require an overhaul of our existing website. We are setup to create the new site on InMotionHosting- so we can begin this at any time. We are looking to revamp the layout as well as add some password protected pages for teachers/parents/new clients to access and share information. Creating the "UD@Home" section of the website is a requirement of our grant. It will be a major asset to our program, allowing the conversations to continue from the classroom to home. It will also give teachers a space to collaborate and share ideas on incorporating UD themes into their everyday lessons. With social and emotional learning taking center stage in schools, this is becoming increasingly vital.

Mission Statement

Understanding Disabilities provides disability awareness programming in the Reading Public Schools, to help children see beyond people's disabilities and focus on the ways that we are all the same inside.

Description

Understanding Disabilities, Inc., is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that serves all students in the Reading public schools and the Reading community at large. Our mission is to educate children about disabilities to help them see beyond people's disabilities and to focus on the ways we are all the same inside.

Celebrating 31 years in the schools, we highlight all that people with disabilities can do and we promote a culture of inclusion and respect. Our curriculum provides information about a range of physical, sensory, and developmental disabilities to improve students’ school, social, and learning experiences. All students benefit from UD programming, but none more than those with disabilities.
