About JA BizTown:

Elementary school students are not old enough to drive, work, or vote. But that doesn't stop them from operating banks, managing businesses, writing checks, investing in stocks, and earning a profit at JA BizTown! The Donald O. Schnuck JA BizTown is a mini-city in which kids discover how the "real world" works. Each day, about 100 fifth or sixth graders become JA BizTown "citizens" where they work in one of 17 businesses, make financial decisions, pay taxes, and donate to charity. After the completion of 12 classroom lessons, students come to JA BizTown for the learning experience of their lives! Each citizen has a job for the day, gets paid twice, manages a checking account, shops, receives child wellness check-ups, may be interviewed on TV and much more. The time spent at JA BizTown may be only one day, but the impact that this experiential learning provides will last a lifetime!

About Volunteering:

JA BizTown helps students connect the dots between what they learn in school and the real world. During the simulation, volunteers guide and assist students as they operate one of the businesses at JA BizTown. Before you begin the JA BizTown program, JA staff will provide online training so you are comfortable with the simulation experience. You will become familiar with the schedule for the day, the work expected of the students, and your roles and responsibilities.

The time commitment is minimal compared to the significant impact you make. JA BizTown is a 4.5 hour visit day. Volunteers are asked to arrive 30 minutes prior to the students for training. This training time is included in your sign-up options.

You will be astonished by how much the students accomplish in such a short period of time! Volunteers are key to the success of this program and we guarantee your day will be rewarding and memorable!

Mission Statement

Junior Achievement of Greater St. Louis, Inc. will ensure that every child in the St. Louis area has a fundamental understanding of the free enterprise system.

Description

Since 1943, Junior Achievement of Greater St. Louis has been providing economic education to students throughout the St. Louis Metropolitan and surrounding areas. Junior Achievement provides hands-on activities that supplement and reinforce the regular classroom curriculum. Junior Achievement's programs empower students by inspiring and preparing them to succeed in a global economy.

Junior Achievement offers vital sequential learning programs to grades K-12 taught in their school classrooms by trained volunteers, like yourself, from the local community. These volunteers serve as role models to the kids, teaching them how to succeed in life through a quality education and responsible personal finance.

The Junior Achievement offices are located at the Dennis & Judy Jones Free Enterprise Center in Chesterfield Valley. Dedicated in May of 2004, The Center also houses JA's two Capstone Programs for grades 5-6 and 8-12. Here, students learn in an interactive environment, developing a comprehensive understanding of how the free enterprise system works.
