Clinical Chemistry Lab - one of the many fascinating rooms at the Indiana Medical History Museum

We are looking for outgoing volunteers to give tours of the building to museum visitors. Tours bring to life the history of science and medicine in Indiana through the exploration of an authentic 1896 medical laboratory, which was once part of Indiana's Central State psychiatric hospital. Our volunteers work during our open hours Wednesdays-Saturdays 10-4 and occasionally for special tours and events. Schedules for volunteers vary - some work a regular schedule (e.g. every Friday) while others fill in as needed for special tours and events. It does take time and effort to learn to lead the tours, and we are looking for people who can commit to volunteer regularly (at least twice a month, full or partial days). The position requires that you complete several hours of training and learn a sizable amount of historical information. All docents must be 18 or older. The tours cover two floors and last an hour or more - so it is not a good position for someone with limited mobility. In addition to giving tours, there may also be opportunities to work on projects related to collections, cataloging, and/or clerical work.

About Indiana Medical History Museum

Location:

Mission Statement

The Indiana Medical History Museum interprets and preserves the Old Pathology Building. Through its exhibits, publications, and programs, the museum educates the community concerning health care, health careers, and life sciences in Indiana during the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries.

Description

The Indiana Medical History Museum is located in the Old Pathology Building on the grounds of the former Central State Hospital on the near westside of Indianapolis. The museum represents the beginning of scientific psychiatry and modern medicine while the building itself is the oldest surviving pathology facility in the nation and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

The museum maintains a collection of scientific artifacts from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries in a completely authentic setting. Constructed in 1895 and inaugurated in 1896, the nineteen-room Pathological Department Building, as it was then called, is equipped with three clinical laboratories, a photography lab, teaching amphitheatre, autopsy room, and library.
