The Smith River Library Branch of the Del Norte County Library is seeking volunteers to open, run, and close the library on an ongoing basis. Smith River has always been a volunteer run library, but we are down to two volunteers and the library is hardly ever open. I am seeking bilingual volunteers so we can better serve the community and its needs.
Right now the library is only open 3 hours on Mondays and Wednesdays, it is very hard for the children in the community to participate in Summer Reading with these hours. We plan to expand our services to the community of Smith River, but we deperatly need volunteers to help us accomplise this.
If you may be interested please pick up a volunteer application at the Del Norte County Library and speak with me (Teena Capshaw). Let's give the children a place to go this summer and beyond.

Mission Statement
Del Norte Reads is a grant funded program that works in conjunction with the Del Norte County Library District to provide free literacy services to community members. We proudly provide FREE assistance with reading, writing, math, computer literacy, high school equivalency and much more. Learners are paired with caring tutors who provide individualized instruction with all aspects of functional literacy. We do this because we believe education is the most deterministic factor in well-being.
Description
In 1988, Del Norte County was awarded funding through the California library services act. From 1988 to 2004 the literacy program went through several iterations, ranging from inhouse to mobile literacy services and even outsourcing to different organizations. Today, the name of this program is Del Norte Reads. We are the only literacy program in Del Norte that offers customized one-to-one or small group learning for adults and families. All of our services are free to our learners. We are looking for compassionate volunteers to engage our hard working learners. An hour a week can change someone's life. So if you have a desire to make a meaningful difference in our community, please consider becoming a volunteer at Del Norte Reads!
