Behavioral conditioning
Handling non-releasable animals is an important part of behavioral training.

Internships at Crosstimbers Ranch have historically been highly coveted positions, as we only offer six slots each summer, and each intern becomes an immediate part of our core team. Four of those slots have already been filled. This is a HANDS-ON position. Have you been told you must have experience? Have you been an intern where you do not handle animals? Not at Crosstimbers!! Everyone works as an equal and important part of our team, learning the skills to safely handle a variety of animals from domestic to wild.

Crosstimbers Ranch is also the home of The National Bobcat Rescue and Research Center. Those interested in working with wild cats will gain ample experience during the summer at the ranch.

Interns are welcome to return year after year until they have completed postgrad or post doctoral work. We have listed start and end dates above, we will work with the date that your school begins and/or end.

Interns will shadow our head animal keeper and/or the director to learn all aspects of working with wild animals, including but not limited to; safe capture and handling, trauma & triage, basic animal husbandry, diagnosis & treatment, ongoing medical care, nutrition, and enrichment. Interns will learn all aspects of behavioral training and operant conditioning. Interns become an integral part of the animal care team and will be expected to work a minimum of 20 hours weekly. Your department may require more hours than that. Please discuss with your department head and we will work with them to meet their requirements. Interns must have reliable transportation, be able to lift 50 pounds, and work outside in the hot Texas heat. Interns will also be responsible for acquiring their own housing. There is currently no monetary stipend attached to this internship.
