Help incarcerated people in Cook County read to their kids

ORGANIZATION: Companions Journeying Together, Inc

  • 21 people are interested

The Aunt Mary's Storybook project brings into the Cook County Jail a selection of brand new books, along with audio recorders. They assist participating detainees in choosing an age-appropriate book for each of their children. Each of the participants are then given an opportunity to record him or herself reading the books for their children. On behalf of the incarcerated mother or father, our organization then sends the books and CDs to the children.

We are looking for one person to join our group of volunteers to go with us in to the Cook County Jail, Division 11, once each month to help incarcerated fathers choose books for their child(ren) and to assist with the recording sessions. The session is the First Saturday of every month from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM.

IMPORTANT: VOLUNTEERS FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE YEAR OF EXPERIENCE IN WORKING *DIRECTLY* WITH JUSTICE-INVOLVED POPULATIONS. Due to the maximum security population we are working with in this session, there is no exception to this requirement.

Please contact us if you are interested.
